In Coach William Stevens 1st season as Head Coach at Phelps High School the Hornets had started the season out 0-3 but Coach Stevens expected these struggles earl on. Coach Stevens knew the Hornets would struggle at the beginning of the season but it was part of his overall plan. Stevens took a page out of the Phillip Haywood, David Jones playbook and scheduled a very tough schedule because he has seen how that prepares you to be your best when the post season rolls around. Most first year coaches would layer their schedule with cup cakes so their record would look good to the public but Stevens knew that wouldn't do his team any favors. With the Hornets playing three very tough opponents in Knott Central, Prestonsburg and Floyd Central, they have not only been battle tested but they also know what it's like to face the high caliber teams in the mountains. We guarantee the Hornets will be a tough out at the end of the season, this is a talented team that has senior leadership and a good coaching staff.

Last night the Hornets seniors came up big and helped lead Coach Stevens to his 1st win in his young coaching career. Phelps quarterback Garret Clevenger is known for his toughness and leadership on the gridiron, he brought them attributes to the diamond last night in a 7-6 win over Grundy (VA). Clevenger came in pitched 2 innings, he didn't give up any hits and had 3 strikeouts but as good as he was on the mound, he was better in the batters box. Clevenger was in the zone, he went 4-5 at the plate and brought in the game winning run in the 8th inning. Seniors Brandon Turnmire & Seth Elkins also came up huge in the victory, Turnmire pitched 4 innings with 8 strikeouts and Elkins went 2-4 at the plate. Daniel Smith also played a big part in the Hornets first win, he pitched 2 innings and had 3 strikeouts while only giving up 1 hit.

This is one of them teams that have a special class of seniors and their not only talented but they are an extremely tough bunch of boys. The Hornets also get the added bonus of playing in front of a great community in Hornetville and have a coaching staff that really supports them. Tonight the 1-3 Hornets take on another team from Virginia, the Hornets will host Hurley at 6pm, come out support these boys and see if they can carry their first winning streak of the season while going undefeated against Virginia teams.
